Why you should be using Google Analytics on your website

Google Analytics LogoGoogle Analytics is a free service offered by Google that monitors traffic and other interesting information for your website.  It supplies you with a vast array of statistics that are both easy to interpret and simple to locate.  It's by far one of the most important steps you should be taking in tracking the success of your website. What is Google Analytics?

From Google: "Google Analytics (GA) is a free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website." In a nutshell:  It tells you how visitors are finding your site, interacting with your site, and leaving your site.

How do I set it up?

Google Analytics is a breeze to set up.  You can sign up for an account here:  www.Google.com/Analytics in just a few minutes.  It's completely free to use and can be set up in a flash.  After you sign up you will be given a tracking code and a snippet of code that you will need to place in the header coding of your website.

How do I start monitoring my website?

From that same web address you will now be able to log into your account.  From your dashboard the options on the left hand side will allow you to choose which pieces of information you would like to see and what features you would like to put in place.

What should I be looking at and why?

The first thing you will want to start keeping track of is how many visitors are coming to your site.  You can view by the hour, day, week, or even by the month.  This can give you an instant screenshot of how your site is performing.  You can also now monitor your advertising to see what things are sending traffic to your site.  Monitoring by the hour you can see if your radio or television ads are leading to traffic. The next thing you should be looking at is how visitors are finding your website.  You can see this under the 'Traffic Sources' section listed under 'Keywords'.  These are the search times that people are entering to find your site.  Learning what terms are your most relevant can help you in optimizing your page to increase that traffic.  Sometimes the keywords that are actually bringing people to your site will surprise you. Another useful feature can be found under the 'Standard Reports - Visitors Flow' area.  This will show you how your potential new clients are interacting with your site.  It demonstrates which pages they are visiting and how they are progressing through the website.  With this information you can begin to learn how your site is funneling traffic and take steps to try to steer them into becoming conversions.  You want to ultimately have them end up at your contact page filling out a form to request your services, right?

There is an entire smorgasbord of other useful features that Google Analytics can provide.
