Blog image for Facebook fan gating working examplesFan gating is a technique used on Facebook fan pages to only display certain pieces of content when someone has 'liked' your page.  A Facebook fan gate is great to lure in and capture a like from a visitor who is looking to get some kind of fan only content on your site.  A free video, free images, coupons for your page, et cetera.  Afterall, why by the cow if you can get the coupons for free?  Facebook fan gating gives you the control of making sure you obtain a like before giving up the goods. Follow along as we describe how to set up fan gating and show some working examples of it currently in use.

Facebook fan gating can be accomplished using many of the static iFrame applications available from developers on Facebook.  My personal favorite that I use is the Static HTML iFrame app.  You can add it to any of the Facebook fan pages you are an administrator on.  Once added you just need to insert your non-liked html content into the non-fan box.  This should have some kind of message expressing that to receive the free stuff they are looking for they will have to first like the page.  Then in the box below insert the HTML content that you want to be made available once someone has liked the page.

That's it!

Once you publish the app and make it live anyone who visits the tab will automatically see the content you've entered into the two boxes dependent on whether or not they are a fan of your page.  You now have control over dishing out specials, coupons, or other freebies.  You can see an example of a working Facebook fan gate by visiting this page we created for the Mobile Tire Company:

You can also use a fan gate as a teaser for your content.  You can see how on our company Facebook fan page how we have a welcome tab that is hidden with a transparency effect that obscures the text below until the page has become liked.  Click on the image to see it in use:

You also have the ability to customize the clickable tab on your Facebook fan page.  Changing it from the static HTML iFrame star icon to one that fits your page is as easy as selecting the edit option on the box and opting to change the ''Custom Tab Image".   Here is an example of a customized tab image.  You can click on the link to visit another working Facebook fan gated page.  This one is another coupon code for a business that is only available once the fan page has been liked.

There are lots of other great uses for a static iFrame Facebook tab.  You can have forms, puzzles, news and events, and many other applications.  They're a good way to spice up your Facebook fan page. Having a fan gated section is a great technique to control the valuable content on your fan page.  It gives you the ability to obtain that ever-so-important like before dispensing out your goodies.  If you have a Facebook fan gated page that you'd like to show off leave us a comment below.  We would love to see it!
